Winner: Pond Hotel Glasgow
Restoring one of the best known and best loved hotels in Glasgow to its 1970’s heyday was always going to be a big challenge. Built in 1971 by the late and great hotelier Sir Reo Stakis, The Glasgow Pond Hotel on Great Western Road was a major destination in the 1970’s and 1980’s
Fortunes then became a bit mixed, but the real revolution and rebirth of the Pond Hotel began with its acquisition by Edinburgh based, fast growing hotel group Portland hotels, from Jurys, the Irish hotel group.
A root and branch refurbishment of the bedrooms, reception, bar and function rooms, spearheaded by Portland with the expert help of Dunn Interiors, the famous Glasgow based design, build and refurbishment specialist, has totally transformed the hotel, which just reopened in December 2006. The new ‘product’, delivered in record time, is second to none, providing Glasgow with a stunning new contemporary, high-end three star hotel with a distinctly four star feel.
The brief - ‘to resurrect the Pond’ – has been truly realised.
And the refurbishment of the Pond Hotel is far from over, with a planning application already lodged for a major extension, which will add another 75 lovely bedrooms to this great and much loved Glasgow hotel.
